Mantracourt's New Software Toolkit Facilitates Complex Load Monitoring

Mantracourt's software toolkit enhances the capabilities of its respected LCA20 load cell amplifier and enables easier set up and more advanced calibration, control and reporting functions.

Mantracourt has announced the launch of a Software Toolkit to accompany its world-renowned LCA20 load cell and strain gauge amplifier, a flexible digital signal conditioning amplifier for single or multiple load monitoring. The new software toolkit enhances the capabilities of the LCA20, enabling easier set up and more advanced control and reporting functions. 

The PC based software toolkit is icon driven, making it intuitive and easy to use. Access to the LCA20 is via a simple connector.  The LCA toolkit enables configuration and calibration of load cell inputs using up to nine point linearisation. It also allows for the setting of load cell filtering characteristics, and digital input functionality, the configuration of the display and generated output values such as the peak, trough, gross and net. The toolkit also includes functions such as system zero and zero tracking. An equally wide range of functionality is applied to the reporting aspects of the toolkit.

The software tool kit allows a number of output and reporting functions to be configured. For the relay outputs, parameters such as in-flight compensation, hysteresis, latching and inversion are available. For the analogue outputs, the toolkit provides for scaling, gross and net values and error compensation. All collected data can be presented in configurable graph formats and logged to a file for exporting. The data can also be used to trigger alarms.

BroadWeigh Appoints Paradigm Rigging as Technical Partner for Wireless Load Monitoring Technology in Canada and the United States

UK instrumentation specialist Mantracourt Electronics has announced the appointment of Paradigm Rigging as Technical Partner for the supply of its BroadWeigh™ wireless load monitoring equipment to the Canadian and United States entertainment sector.

The BroadWeigh portable wireless system offers real-time, simple, effective and accurate load monitoring for rigging professionals, safety officials and site managers, enabling them to monitor and log the precise loads on any given rigging point.

Mantracourt Offers Free Data Logging and Monitoring Software

Mantracourt is to supply its T24LOG100 advanced data logging and mapping software free of charge with the purchase of any of its T24 wireless sensor range

Electronics instrumentation specialist Mantracourt has announced that it will be now be providing its acclaimed T24LOG100 data logging software free of charge with every purchase of products within its T24 wireless sensor range.

The T24LOG100 software allows the user to view and log up to 100 channels of wireless instrumentation data simultaneously, whilst also offering a range of sophisticated maths functions that will enable engineers to optimise system monitoring and control software.

“The T24LOG100 package has been developed in house, and provides a reliable and accurate solution for the collection of data,” said Kelly Voysey, Marketing Manager at Mantracourt.  “This new version has had a makeover in terms of the graphical interface, but it very much retains the intuitive nature of the previous version and retains the many intelligent
functions and features of the original version.”

Using the T24LOG100, the user is able to display a sensor value in a resizable window and channels can be setup with user-defined algorithms that can be used to calculate a multitude of maths functions. Visual displays and noise indicator alarms can also be set to indicate under and over range, as well as loss in communications. The T24LOG100 can log at a user defined rate, on demand, on entering and leaving a pre-set overload and during an overload. The data collected is generated in a CSV format, enabling external analysis.

BroadWeigh Benefits from In-House Calibration Technology for Wireless Load Monitoring System

Wireless load monitoring system for rigging professionals is now factory tested using automated calibration machine for assured accuracy and reliability

Mantracourt, the manufacturer of the BroadWeigh™ load monitoring system, has announced that it has developed and manufactured a dedicated in-house test and calibration machine to further ensure the accuracy and reliability of its acclaimed BroadWeigh wireless load monitoring system.

The BroadWeigh portable wireless system offers real-time, simple, effective and accurate load monitoring for rigging professionals, safety officials and site managers enabling them to monitor and log the precise loads on any given rigging point.

Central to the design of the BroadWeigh system are Crosby shackles equipped with a high accuracy, wireless load pin that reports data remotely to a computer or a handheld display.  The system is able to monitor multiple load cells and can trigger an alarm should a load exceed a preset parameter. 

“Each BroadWeigh shackle is now calibrated using our new test machine,” said Kelly Voysey, Marketing Manager. “The Calibration software developed by our engineering team communicates directly with the shackle and the test rig to record the shackle's calibration. The software then generates a calibration certificate.”

With this development, the BroadWeigh range of products is now designed, manufactured, calibrated and tested in-house at Mantracourt’s factory in Exeter, in the south-west of England. The company strongly believes that this in-house approach enables them to maintain the quality and usability of their instrumentation products, as well as the accuracy and reliability of every solution that leaves the factory. 

“The new automated calibration technology will help us meet the increasing demand for our BroadWeigh system, whilst helping us ensure its accuracy and reliability in the field,” said Kelly Voysey. ‘In this respect, it has been an important achievement, as we look to build on our success going forward.”

Using the new test installation, each shackle is calibrated and linearised over 8 weight points covering its operating range. Each weight is applied and allowed to settle, and then the calibration and linearisation parameters are calculated and applied to the shackle.

Once all points have been calibrated, the shackle is unloaded then loaded again at 4 points over its operating range to check that it falls within in-house specification. The calibration record is electronically stored for future recall, and a Calibration Certificate is issued showing the results of the 4-point calibration check.

The in-house calibration machine has a capacity of calibrating up to 10 tonnes and the main rig load cell is calibrated against an NPL approved transfer standard load cell.

Mantracourt Electronics Expands Production Capability to Meet Global Demand

UK instrumentation manufacturer invests in new reflow soldering equipment to improve quality, increase productivity and support future growth

Specialist UK instrumentation manufacturer Mantracourt Electronics has announced the acquisition of a new Ersa reflow soldering machine and plans to further acquire a new Ersa selective soldering machine in January. 

Mantracourt’s expansion in manufacturing capability has been driven by a continued growth in worldwide demand for its range of wired and wireless sensor technology. Working with technical partners across the world, Mantracourt has established its brand in many new countries, as well as introducing new products into its range.

"This is an exciting investment for us, as we continue to design and manufacture all our products in-house," said Kelly Voysey, Marketing Manager. The newly delivered reflow soldering machine has been manufactured by Ersa in Germany, a respected leader in this field. The new machine is more efficient and offers a higher capacity than Mantracourt’s existing machines, it can handle larger PCB’s, it has an easy double-sided soldering capability and it facilitates a quick change over of products. It is also environmentally more advanced than previous machine designs.

Wireless Load Cell Technology is Further Adopted by The Entertainments Industry

Load cell rental company to supply BroadWeigh wireless load monitoring technology

BroadWeigh’s exclusive UK partner, A.C. Entertainment Technologies Ltd (Rigging Division), have announced the supply of three full kits of 12-point load monitoring to UK-based Load Cell Rental, in a major deal to kick start the company’s wireless equipment hire offering. 

The BroadWeigh portable wireless system offers real-time, simple, effective and accurate load monitoring for rigging professionals, safety officials and site managers enabling them to monitor and log the precise loads on any given rigging point.

Central to the design of the BroadWeigh system are Crosby shackles equipped with a high accuracy, wireless load pin that reports data remotely to a computer or a handheld display.  The system is able to monitor multiple load cells and can trigger an alarm should a load exceed a preset parameter. 

Load Cell Rental’s BroadWeigh wireless package includes 36 of the 4.75 ton load monitoring shackles, handheld displays for viewing individual cells, extended range USB base stations, wireless active repeaters and BroadWeigh compact flight cases to house the three kits.

“A wireless load cell system was a natural progression, as wireless systems are anticipated to be very popular for dry hire use in all venues of live music, as well as being used for weight report services where time constraints are an issue at load in,” says Colin Luke, Operations at Load Cell Rental.


“Demand is on the rise due to the increasing weight of touring productions, as well as CDM regulations enforcement coming into play within the industry. BroadWeigh products have a reputation for robustness, and the simplicity of the load cell shackle and minimal effect on trim height was a major attraction.”

New custom designed, compact case now available for up to 8 wireless load cell shackles

Mantracourt have announced that a smaller size case is now available for its BroadWeigh™ wireless load monitoring system, addressing the demand for a solution that is easily transportable when on tour and better suited to smaller projects.

The new, compact, robust and lockable case will provide protection and security for the BroadWeigh system with heavy duty handles for ease of transportation. 

The BroadWeigh portable wireless system offers real-time, simple, effective and accurate load monitoring for rigging professionals, safety officials and site managers enabling them to monitor and log the precise loads on any given rigging point.

Mantracourt Wireless Instrumentation Range Now Available in Japan

Mantracourt appoints distributor for electronic instrumentation products and achieves telemetry certification for its T24 wireless instrumentation product range for the Japanese market

Electronic instrumentation specialist Mantracourt Electronics has announced that it has appointed Tokyo Sokki as a technical partner for Japan. Tokyo Sokki will assist in the sales and technical support for Mantracourt’s broad range of load cell amplifier technology and wireless instrumentation systems.

UK based Mantracourt is a world leader in the design and manufacture of electronics for measurement technologies, including strain gauge, temperature, resistance, pressure, voltage, current, potentiometer, rate, flow, LVDT and displacement in either analogue, digital or wireless form. The T24 range now complies with the strict Japanese technical regulations for radio equipment  (TELEC Certification). This was gained from the Telecommunications Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The Mantracourt T24 wireless telemetry range is a flexible low power radio system designed to enable the transmission of high accuracy measurement data including voltage, current, pulse, temperature, displacement and also data from pressure sensors and load cells.
With a combination of transmitter and receiver technologies, users are able to remotely monitor instrumentation readings.

A T24 module can transmit to a range of receivers including handheld indicators, digital displays, analogue and serial outputs, PC display and wireless printer and has various powering options. Data is provided in real time at variable speeds with a direct line of sight range of up to 200 meters, which can be extended with the use of high gain antenna’s and repeaters.

Mantracourt Load Cell Amplifier Enables Tunnel Monitoring System

Instrumentation to monitor the displacement on the joints within a major new tunnel is enabled with Mantracourt's SGA load cell amplifiers.

Specialist electronic instrumentation manufacturer, Mantracourt Electronics Ltd, has announced that its SGA load cell amplifiers are being used within the monitoring systems of the Marmaray Project, a major new rail tunnel project in Turkey.

The 76.3km long tunnel is the deepest immersed tunnel in the world and is regarded as the foremost challenging infrastructure project in Turkey.

The Marmaray development team needed to monitor the displacement of the joints within the tunnel. Mantracourt Technical Partner, Applied Measurements Ltd, created a bespoke bridge monitoring system using three 50mm displacement transducers, forming a triaxial measurement of each joint.


The displacement transducers utilise strain gauge technology to convert the linear movement of the joints within the tunnel into an analogue electrical signal. Mantracourt’s SGA load cell amplifiers are used to amplify the transducers signals, enabling the Marmaray team to accurately monitor the displacement of the joints within the tunnel.  

“We chose to use Mantracourt SGA load cell amplifiers for this project, due to their high stability and accuracy,” said Darren Skipp at Applied Measurements.  ”This level of performance is essential for such a major project. We are very pleased with the way the system is performing.”

The SGA series of load cell amplifiers are capable of delivering highly stable, high speed, industry standard analogue outputs, such as 0-10Vdc or 4-20mA, from very low-level input signals.

Mantracourt Load Cell Amplifier Enables Robot Stability

Hexapod robot designers choose the Mantracourt ICA load cell amplifier for the detection of forces on each leg

Electronic instrumentation manufacturer Mantracourt has announced that its ICA2 load cell amplifier is being used within the design of the Mantis, a hexapod robot, designed and manufactured by Micromagic Systems Robotics Ltd.

The Mantis is an all-terrain machine that stands 2.8 metres high, weighs nearly 2 tonnes and can be manually piloted or remote wifi controlled.

“Working closely with Micromagic Systems Robotics Ltd, our UK technical partner Applied Measurements, supplied and designed customised load cells for this project,” said Louise Stubbs, Marketing Co-ordinator at Mantracourt.  “These are especially robust, compact and submersible, as the Mantis is required to travel over most types of terrain and even wade through water. Using our in-line Mantracourt ICA amplifiers in waterproof enclosures, the load cell outputs are monitored via a 0-5Vdc signal to the control unit.“

Mantracourt Launches New Improved Load Cell Amplifier

Mantracourt's LCA20 load cell weight indicator is a digital signal conditioning amplifier for multiple or single load cell applications, offering one-pass calibration and fast set-up.

Electronic instrumentation company Mantracourt has announced the launch of the LCA20, a flexible digital signal conditioning amplifier for single or multiple load cell applications.

The versatile LCA20 load cell weight indicator offers options of 3 programmable digital inputs including Auto Tare, Peak Hold and Reset. In addition, the LCA20 provides two relay outputs for control or alarm functions and is now able to support up to ten 350 ohm load cells. The new LCA20 features include a simplified digital set-up via PC, 10 point linearisation and the provision of measurement speeds of 10 or 80 samples per second.
 
“The LCA20 takes advantage of new technology, it replaces and builds on our previous LCA15 load cell amplifier, providing increased functionality and improved performance,” said Dave Porter, Technical Sales at Mantracourt. “The core design is based on existing, proven technology but it has now been updated to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of end-users in the field.”

The LCA20 provides both RS232 and RS485 options for digital communications (including setup) and can support label or ticket printers. Furthermore, the LCA20 is enabled with an easy one-pass calibration and fast setup procedure.

The LCA20 supports Mantrabus 1 & 2, MANTRA ASCII 2 and MODBUS RTU protocols. It is housed in a ROHS compliant enclosure and is environmentally sealed to IP65 / NEMA 4  (dimensions 200 x 120 x 75 mm). DIN rail or PCB module versions are also available.

The LCA20 also caters to existing LCA15 users in that it features a full LCA15 emulation mode.   The LCA20 shown in main photo has the transparent lid option (LTL).

Mantracourt have announced that their BroadWeigh™ wireless load monitoring system has recently been employed for the safe installation of a large overhead multi-screen display system at an ice rink in North Bay, Canada.

The BroadWeigh system was used initially to monitor the loads on four electric chain hoists during the lifting operation, and then to confirm the loads on the final rigging hardware for the multi-screen display.

The BroadWeigh portable wireless system offers real-time, simple, effective and accurate load monitoring for rigging professionals, safety officials and site managers enabling them to monitor and log the precise loads on any given rigging point.

Central to the design of the BroadWeigh system are Crosby shackles equipped with a high accuracy, wireless load pin that reports data remotely to a computer or a handheld display.  The system is able to monitor multiple load cells and can trigger an alarm should a load exceed a preset parameter.  During this project the load data from each wireless load cell shackle was displayed on a computer screen.

David Bond, BroadWeigh’s North American representative, worked together with Guy Wallace and the Westbury National Show Systems Ltd. team to address their requirements and concerns prior to the purchase as well as instruction and support on site during the operation.  This instruction included both the hardware and software elements of the system.

“The lifting procedure was a critical stage of the installation,” said David.
“Should one hoist not support its equal part of the load, then that corner would drop and the structure would tilt on just two opposite suspension points, grossly overloading those two points.  This could have caused a catastrophic failure. The BroadWeigh wireless system enabled the team to closely and accurately monitor the situation throughout the procedure.”

The latest version of the BroadWeigh Log monitoring software (BW-LOG100) has been released to complement the BroadWeigh Load Monitoring System.  BW-LOG100 is now more than just a data logging software package and offers many additional features.

BW-LOG100 software, developed to support the acclaimed BroadWeigh wireless load monitoring system, allows the viewing and logging of up to 100 channels of data from multiple wireless acquisition devices including load cells and anemometers.  A web server feature now allows this data to be viewed remotely from a computer, tablet or any web enabled device.

Mantracourt remains on track for further growth, after an impressive 40 years of business

UK based instrumentation manufacturer, Mantracourt Electronics has announced that it is celebrating its 40th year in business. Mantracourt is recognised as a world leader in the development of micro electronics and software for measurement and data logging. Founded in 1974, father and son, Bob and David Willmington established the business, developing a range of electronic controllers and alarm devices. The company soon established a reputation for innovation, accuracy and reliability, and has since gone on to develop over 1,000 instrumentation products and a vast global network of resellers. Not only has a Mantracourt solution been sent into space, but also in 2009, Mantracourt won the prestigious Queens award for Enterprise in International Trade.

Mantracourt Electronics Achieves 25% Growth During 2013

Electronic instrumentation specialist increases overseas sales performance with new technology and enhanced distribution channels

Exeter based Mantracourt Electronics has announced a 25% growth in sales for 2013. With product sales of £3.3m, and direct exports making up 45% of this total, Mantracourt has further established its lead role in the design and manufacture of instrumentation technology.

Mantracourt is a world leader in the design and manufacture of electronics for measurement technologies, including strain gauge, temperature, resistance, pressure, voltage, current, potentiometer, rate, flow, LVDT and displacement in either analogue, digital or wireless form. With a reputation for innovative design and quality of products, Mantracourt is a key OEM supplier for a diverse range of industries.

 

Mantracourt attributes its success to the growth in demand for its wireless instrumentation range (T24), for which it saw a 63% increase in sales revenue. In addition to this, Mantracourt has expanded its global technical partner network whereby their products are supplied to sensor and instrumentation companies in over 30 locations worldwide.

Ontario Concert Venue Chooses BroadWeigh Wireless Load Monitoring

Casino Rama’s Entertainment Centre in Ontario selects BroadWeigh wireless load monitoring system to enhance the safety of stage rigging and to protect building structure from excessive loads

Mantracourt have announced that their BroadWeigh wireless load monitoring system has been chosen by technicians at Casino Rama, a major concert and event centre in Ontario, Canada.

The wireless BroadWeigh™ system enables the accurate, real-time load monitoring of rigged equipment and has been designed to assist designers and rigging professionals within the entertainment sector. 

“The safety of our guests, performers and staff will always be Casino Rama’s top priority,” said Derek Noble, Lead Lighting Technician at the Casino Rama Entertainment Centre. Production rigging at the facility’s 5,000 capacity concert hall is no exception to this.

Central to the design of the BroadWeigh system are wireless shackles equipped with a high accuracy load pin that reports data remotely to a computer or a handheld display.  The system is able to monitor multiple load cells and can trigger an alarm should a load exceed a preset parameter.

“The ease of use of the BroadWeigh system, the speed at which it can be implemented and cost/value means it is both the best and the safest option for us,” said Derek. “I would gladly recommend this system for any venue that is concerned with rigging overloads or incoming tours damaging the existing roof structures.”

Prior testing of the BroadWeigh system’s wireless data transfer was carried out at the facility to prove stability of the platform and to be sure that the BroadWeigh signal was not interfering with or being affected by other wireless signals in the building. Casino Rama Entertainment Centre relies on numerous wireless communication systems for its daily operations, as well as incoming productions devices and the possible 5,000 mobile phone users who attend the concerts.

“Initially I was concerned with interference due to the number of wireless systems already in the building but not anymore,” said Derek. “The communication was better than we expected. This system enables us to know what production is rigging in terms of both the weight and balance of the loads. The price point per shackle meant we could purchase more load cells than the other systems we considered while still achieving the desired result. ”

BroadWeigh’s North American representative, David Bond, worked together with Derek Noble and his team to address every requirement and concern prior to the purchase and also provided a training day upon delivery of their order. This instruction included both the hardware and software elements of the system.

Mantracourt Launches Large Format Wireless Instrumentation Display

Large format (100 mm) wireless LED display enables the remote display of instrumentation data

Mantracourt has announced the release of the T24-LD1, a large format LED display that has been designed to integrate into their highly respected T24 wireless instrumentation range of products.  

The T24-LD1 is a four digit display with 100 mm (4 inch) character format
that enables the remote display of instrumentation data from multiple wireless sensors such as strain gauges, load cells and wind speed sensors. 

The display is ideal for application use in process control, lifting and handling, waste management, civil engineering, agriculture and silo management.

"Until now, data from the T24 wireless sensors has been mostly logged on a PC for collection and analysis or displayed on one of our handheld device," said Dave Porter, Technical Sales at Mantracourt. Miniature Load Cell Amplifier Used for Antarctic Project

Mantracourt load cell technology enables Antarctic research project

Mantracourt Electronics’ miniature load cell and strain gauge amplifier (ICA4S) was chosen as a key component in a project to build a drill that recently  extracted a 763m ice core from the Ross Ice Shelf in western Antarctica.  The research from the study will build a better picture of atmospheric greenhouse gases, sea level and temperature change over the last 20,000-40,000 years.

For this project, Mantracourt’s ICA4S load cell amplifiers have been incorporated into a pair of load pins to provide a 4-20mA output for the monitoring of drilling forces during extraction.

“The drill system is now into its third year of service on the ice,” said Louise Stubbs, Marketing Coordinator at Mantracourt. “This project is a very good test of our technology, with extreme temperatures and a rigorous demand for accuracy and reliability.”

The ICA range of miniature load cell signal conditioners offers a high performance strain gauge amplifier in miniature OEM format, designed specifically for fitting inside load cells, thereby converting a standard load cell to a 0-10 volt or 4-20mA output.

The ICA family offers high stability and fast response and is available in 6 versions with two performance categories S & H (industrial & very high stability). The ICAH range offers very low drift over wide operating temperatures. There is also an ATEX certification available on one version of this device.

BroadWeigh Technology Helps to Optimise Rigging Stability

The BroadWeigh load monitoring system provides essential measurements of force to help operatives avoid overload of design parameters.

UK technology company Mantracourt Electronics has launched a new range of load monitoring equipment that targets the requirements of the entertainment industry.  




Mantracourt's BroadWeigh system provides accurate, wireless, real-time load monitoring of stage equipment and has been designed to assist rigging professionals within the entertainment sector.

Central to the design of the system is a wireless shackle equipped with a high accuracy load pin that is able to report data wirelessly to a computer or a handheld display.  The system is able to monitor multiple loads and trigger an alarm should a load exceed a preset parameter.

“BroadWeigh has been especially developed for riggers to provide simple, effective, accurate and easy to use load monitoring,” said Jonathan Purdue, Business Development Manager at Mantracourt. “BroadWeigh easily enables the monitoring of the individual loads on each suspension point in a lifting operation. This information facilitates the correct balance and distribution of load. In addition it can provide early warnings prior to overload or under-load situations before an accident occurs.

The system also accommodates a wireless wind speed sensor (Anemometer) that can operate alongside the BroadWeigh shackle and base station. This enables the monitoring of wind speed in conjunction with actual loads in one simple system. With a wireless range of up to 400 m, this device features a power saving mode between transmissions to maximise battery life in the field.

New data logging software offers 100 channels of instrumentation data and many advanced features.

T24 Wireless Instrumentation Plays Key Role in Formula SAE Success

Leading instrumentation company Mantracourt has announced that its wireless instrumentation technology has played an important part in the recent success of Canadian race team Formula SAE ÉTS.


The Formula SAE ÉTS team has enjoyed considerable success in several international competitions whereby they secured a number of 1st and 2nd places, against fierce competition. As a part of a sponsorship package for the 'École de Technologie Superieure' engineering team from the University of Quebec in Canada, Mantracourt has been providing wireless torque measurement instrumentation and technical support to enable drive shaft torque measurements during testing.

Mantracourt Base Station Extends Range of Wireless Instrumentation

T24-BSue offers a line of sight range of up to 200m

UK instrumentation specialist Mantracourt has announced the addition of a new base station to its T24 range of wireless equipment.

The new base station (T24-BSue) offers an extended range, with a line of sight range of up to 200m (650ft) for T24 acquisition modules. The T24-BSue interfaces to a PC via USB, has an IP65 (equivalent to environmental NEMA 4 rating) enclosure and is powered via USB, enabling ease of installation and ease of use.

The T24-BSue is also compatible with Mantracourt's T24 repeater technology, enabling impressive -line of sight operation for the T24 series of instrumentation.

Mantracourt Introduces an Interface Module for the SGA Load Cell Conditioner

Bridge Completion Module Enables Broader Application of Strain Gauge Amplifier

Mantracourt have announced the release of a Bridge Completion Module (SGABCM), a small retro-fit PCB which facilitates connecting a half or quarter-bridge strain gauge to their SGA Load Cell conditioner. 

An important feature of the Bridge Completion Module is that it is easily installed. It simply screws into the existing load cell connector on the SGA amplifier module. It also has on-board screw terminal connections that accept a wide range of bridge completion resistors, enabling on-site installation without soldering equipment.

Mantracourt's market leading SGA Strain Gauge Amplifier is a high performance signal conditioner for single or multiple strain gauge bridge sensors such as load, force, pressure and torque. The SGA offers a wide bandwidth and a wide input signal range. The device can be powered from AC or DC supplies providing excitation for up to 4 x 350 ohm strain gauge bridges.

The quarter bridge strain gauge circuit, together with its completion resistor can be wired for compression or tension (stretching) giving a positive output and half bridge strain gauge devices are simply connected to the BCM module via the screw terminals, with no additional components required.

The Bridge Completion Module has high stability resistors (5ppm/°C) fitted for the ‘fixed’ arms of the bridge, and screw terminals are provided for a ‘Shunt Calibration’ shunt resistor to be fitted, to periodically check the integrity of the strain gauge(s), wiring and calibration. A ‘Remote Shunt Calibration’ can be performed by energising a miniature 24V relay fitted to the BCM. Multiple SGAs in an installation can be shunt calibrated simultaneously.

Mantracourt Launches Wireless Telemetry Modbus Gateway

Modbus Gateway provides a simple interface for engineers to gather data from wireless instrumentation

Instrumentation specialists Mantracourt have announced the launch of their T24-GW1 Modbus Gateway as a further addition to their acclaimed T24 wireless instrumentation range. The T24-GW1 is a gateway that provides a simple interface for users to gather data from up to 100 acquisition modules in a T24 network, using either the standard Modbus interface RTU protocol or a simple ASCII protocol.


The T24-GW1 is already at work, helping to manufacture confectionary products accurately and reliably. 


The T24-GW1 is already being used for process control applications in areas such as confectionary manufacturing but is also suitable for a variety of other applications including industrial processing, chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and automotive.

"Basically the GW1 is a data translator, “said Jonathan Purdue, Technical Sales Engineer at Mantracourt.”The GW1 takes the information from T24 modules and displays the raw number in predefined locations in its registry. Then a Modbus PLC, or Industrial PC, can be programmed to show which locations relate to which module. The PLC can request that information or the GW1 can push the information out to the PLC using ASCII protocol."

Mantracourt Launches Wireless Wind Speed Indicator

Anemometer design is based on Mantracourt’s T24 2.4Ghz Wireless Technology

Mantracourt have announced the launch of the T24-WSS wireless wind speed indicator (Anemometer).  The T24-WSS is a wind speed indicator built on Mantracourt’s T24 2.4GHz wireless technology and will operate alongside any Mantracourt T24 device such base stations, handheld displays, analogue outputs, relay modules and GPRS data loggers.

The wind speed sensor features a high quality 3-cup rotor pressed on a stainless steel shaft with rugged Delrin body with bronze Rulon bushings. The output value of the anemometer can be calibrated and configured to the user’s requirements and can measure over the range 5 to 125 mph. It will ‘power down’ between transmissions to maximise battery life in the field and has a wireless range of up to 200 metres.

The Mantracourt T24 wireless telemetry range is a flexible low power radio system designed to enable the transmission of high accuracy measurement data from load cells, inclinometers, accelerometers, temperature, displacement and pressure sensors. With a combination of transmitter and receiver technologies, engineers are able to remotely monitor instrumentation readings.

The T24-WSS is factory set to sample the anemometer every 5 seconds; running continuously, the batteries in the module will last 1 month and 11 days (based on Duracell LR20 D Cells). Using a handheld, T24-RDC or other peripheral T24 device to wake and sleep the module will extend the battery life further. The sample frequency can also be increased however this will have an effect on the battery life.

Mantracourt Wireless Data Collector Enables Remote Monitoring of Instrumentation over GPRS

Expanding on their T24 range of wireless instrumentation, the T24-RDC is a remote data acquisition system that has been developed to utilise the existing GPRS network, enabling the remote monitoring of sensors and instrumentation. Using a Quad band GPRS modem, the wireless data collector allows users to log and report data to multiple destinations including servers, email addresses and mobile phones via text messaging, allowing for worldwide access to data for recording and monitoring. 

“The T24-RDC is a well thought out and very intelligent piece of equipment,” said Kelly Voysey, Sales and Marketing Manager at Mantracourt. “Its design has been driven by certain key customers that had very demanding requirements. The result is a powerful and robust unit that will enable engineers to reliably monitor instrumentation remotely, and in considerable detail.”

The remote data logging system can accept data from multiple inputs including: mV/V strain measurement, 4-20mA, 0-10V, temperature, pulse and potentiometer. All data is time and date stamped and sent to destinations at regular intervals. Measurements are also compared to user defined limits which can trigger alert messages allowing real time monitoring of an entire system.

“During its development, we have had a number working systems out in the field,” said Kelly. “For example, they have been used to monitor the performance of the loads exerted on hydraulic struts used in shoring construction pits, with the data being collated on a website for viewing.  The T24-RDC has also been used to help monitor vibration levels during a construction project, enabling the sending of text messages to the phones of key personnel when vibration levels were above set limits.”

The T24-RA wireless potentiometer module is designed for the collection and processing of potentiometer related measurements such as provided by a linear displacement transducer. The T24-TA wireless temperature module is designed for the collection and processing of temperature data as determined by an external platinum temperature sensor (Pt100).  The temperature measuring device records the temperature and periodically transmits the data to a remote receiver. Leading electronic instrumentation manufacturer Mantracourt has announced the release of its new wireless telemetry pulse acquisition module.


The T24-PA wireless pulse acquisition module is designed for the collection and processing of pulse related measurements. This includes the measurement between pulses to provide outputs in Hz, RPM and Period as well as actual pulse counting. Miniature in size, the device transmits on license-free 2.4Ghz, avoiding local radio interference to ensure data integrity and security. The T24-PA wireless pulse measuring device is also available in IP rated enclosures.

‘Active Repeater’ enables broader coverage for wireless instrumentation

"As many engineers will be aware, a low power telemetry system can overcome a lot of logical problems when collecting instrumentation data in difficult to access locations," said Kelly Voysey. The Active Repeater enables engineers to overcome this, broadening the coverage of the system and ensuring the integrity of the data being monitored. For more remote monitoring, the T24 system can also be interfaced to a GSM system."

The T24 system has a range of up to 200m (650ft) without the use of a repeater. Using the Active Repeater will allow messages to be repeated once, which can effectively double the radio range. It is powered by either a pair of alkaline ‘D’ Cells or an external power supply (5-18 Volts) and can be configured for extended battery life. The Repeater is also enclosed in an IP65 rated NEMA4 protected enclosure, to ensure protection in hostile environments.

Mantracourt’s Strain Gauge Amplifier (SGA) is a high performance signal conditioner for single or multiple strain gauge bridge sensors such as load, force, pressure and torque. The SGA offers a wide bandwidth and a wide input signal range and can be powered from AC or DC supplies, providing excitation for up to 4 x 350 ohm strain gauge bridges. The conditioned output signal can be selected from 0-20mA, 4-20mA, 0-10V, 0-5V, ±5V or ±10V. Options include isolated DC supply, DIN rail mount and an OEM module.

Mantracourt's Wireless Strain Measurement Technology is Chosen for the Testing of Critical Offshore Systems

Mantracourt, a world leader in strain gauge measurement technology, have announced that their wireless telemetry strain acquisition technology has been chosen by Technip Umbilical Systems (DUCO Ltd), a company that manufactures a range of bespoke 'umbilical systems' for offshore applications.

DUCO umbilicals form the critical link between a subsea production arrangement and a remote facility providing control, power, and communications and chemical services. Applications include production control, chemical injection, subsea pumping and processing, gas lift and underground gas storage among others.

Using Mantracourt's wireless technology, DUCO perform steel tube fatigue tests and remotely monitor strain throughout. This testing is essential as umbilical structures can undergo dynamic stresses throughout service life, which can impact on lifespan and performance. Accurate fatigue data is therefore essential.

"Mantracourt's T24 wireless strain measurement system is ideal for our application," said Robert Nesbitt, Principal Engineer at DUCO. “The tubes rotate during component testing, so 'wired' systems have proven impractical. Moving to the robust, wireless telemetry approach of the T24 is enabling us to reliably collect critical data.”

Tom Crawford, Test Technician at DUCO added that  “With the sleep and wake feature, the requirement for personnel intervention can be reduced and battery life increased. Features such as the very small size of the device and Mantracourt’s excellent technical support have also contributed to the success of this project."

The DUCO system operates with a Mantracourt T24-ACMm, a mini IP54 enclosure which houses the strain gauge acquisition device, converting the analogue signal (mV) to a digital format which is then transmitted via 2.4Ghz frequency to a PC. The internal antenna provides range of up to 100m. The T24-ACMm also has options for a voltage or current input. A small battery pack with 2 x AAA cells is used to provide 3V DC power and has been fixed to the rotating tubes. Duco have used Mantracourt’s toolkit software to receive and log data to a .csv file.

The T24 ACMm has simple screw field terminals for easy wiring to a variety of sensors. It also offers users the option to fit wired completion resistors allowing a strain input to be either full, half or quarter bridge.   

The optional T24-BB1 provides battery power using 2 x AAA Cells and is connected to the ACMm via simple screw field terminals for easy wiring.

Mantracourt Technology Enables Remote Load Monitoring

Mantracourt telemetry system enables data collection for the construction industry

Mantracourt, a leader in industrial measurement technologies, has announced that its radio telemetry acquisition system for strain gauge and load cell data is at the heart of Groundforce’s new remote load monitoring technology.

British company Groundforce, a division of Vp plc, provides shoring, formwork and piling equipment and services to the construction industry. By incorporating Mantracourt’s wireless telemetry technology into pre-calibrated load pins, Groundforce now offer its clients an accurate means of remotely measuring the actual loads in heavy duty hydraulic struts used in construction pits, thereby providing their customers a cost effective early warning measurement service.


“Being able to use wireless telemetry technology for strain and load measurement is enabling many new applications“ said Kelly Voysey of Mantracourt. “It’s proving ideal for applications within the construction and civil engineering industries, where access and cabling is limited or indeed, impossible.”


The T24-SA remote acquisition module provides high performance wireless measurement of strain gauge, pressure, load cell, linear displacement and other 4 wire bridge sensors. Providing direct mV/V input and 5V bridge excitation for up to 4 load cells. The miniature size allows for the option of embedding within the sensor housing and its low power modes provides ‘power down’ between transmissions or remote controlled power ‘on’ and ‘off’ giving exceptionally long battery life.

Data from the load pins within the struts can either be collected using a hand held display or by using Mantracourt’s GPRS sampling device; a unit that automatically gathers on-site data at pre-set intervals and transfers this via the GPRS network to emails, mobile phone or remote servers.

“The Mantracourt system is proving to be a valuable addition to our product range, offering a progressive means of information gathering for construction companies,” said Tony Gould, Technical Director of Groundforce.

Mantracourt’s Strain Gauge Indicator Proves a Major Success

Mantracourt, a leading manufacturer of industrial measurement technologies, is celebrating the success of its portable strain gauge display for use as a strain gauge indicator or load cell indicator, (PSD). Developed for a range of industrial customer applications, the PSD is now used by thousands of engineers and technicians around the world.


Enabled for automatic sensor calibration and having a waterproof enclosure, a long battery life and with a sister handheld for RS232 output, the PSD strain gauge indicator is ideal for a broad range of industrial applications where load, pressure, force or weight measurement data needs to be reliably and accurately recorded.

“The PSD strain gauge display has been developed over recent years for use in harsh environments and is also small and light, so it has proven ideal for the collection of strain gauge and load cell data in industrial and architectural environments,” said Kelly Voysey. “There is also a great deal of intelligence that has been developed into the PSD, making it a highly effective and powerful tool for the collection and analysis of this type of data.”

A typical application of the PSD digital display has been the monitoring of the loads on ‘guide wires’, used to maintain the stability of radio masts. Load shackles with built-in TEDS capabilities are used in the guylines. The TEDS shackles have the intelligence to hold the calibration details of the associated shackle. Using a TEDS enabled PSD load cell display, an operative can connect the PSD to each shackle through a 5 pin Binder socket and the mating connector supplied. Once connected, the load can be easily read by the PSD using the simple peak/valley hold or gross/net keyboard functions. As calibration is not required, the handheld does not need to be informed as to what shackle it is currently measuring which prevents mix-ups occurring when taking readings. Anyone attending the mast can simply take the readings required by connecting and switching on the PSD. Alternatively, using the PSD232, the sister of the PSD, connection to RS232 can be made which will allow users to interface with a PC or datalogger, for example. The PSD232 sends the displayed value to the RS232 port at 9600 baud in an ASCII format, terminated by a carriage return and line-feed.

Designing Electronics for Hazardous Environments

With the tragic advent of BP's recent oil rig disaster and also recent mining tragedies, businesses are increasingly looking to improve safety. Demand for electronic systems that can safely and reliably operate in extreme environments is increasing. This article looks at the challenges engineers face when developing electronics for hazardous environments.

Mantracourt is a leading manufacturer of industrial measurement technologies. Having recently announced the availability of their new ALA5 Load Cell Amplifier, an ATEX approved strain gauge/load cell amplifier designed for operation within explosive atmospheres in hazardous zones, they have taken on the challenge and developed a wealth of knowledge and expertise in this area.

The main challenges for the development of the ALA5 was those of the enclosure design and the consideration of avoiding any potential for the circuit or enclosure to create a spark that may ignite a gas.

"With the electronics, it’s about keeping inductance and capacitance down to a level that will not cause a spark,” said Brett James, Senior Designer. “This can place a major restraint on design freedom and component choice and this issue can also get more challenging as the supply voltage increases. Ensuring that the power dissipation on components does not cause a rise in temperature that could ignite gases is another major design consideration, and again, can restrict design freedom."

Mantracourt’s existing non-ATEX approved amplifier circuit is not only proven but is also often incorporated into other OEM devices. With this in mind, the engineering team were reluctant to make changes to the existing PCB layout. Instead, they focused their attentions on changing component values to address the requirement for avoiding spark creation due to component creepage, clearance, temperature and electrical properties. In simple terms, this meant increasing resistor values and lowering capacitor values. In more realistic terms it meant designing and testing a new circuit that would meet the amplifier performance specification whilst also passing EMC testing and addressing the ATEX requirements as well.


"With the enclosure, we have to ensure that it is made from materials that will not cause a spark, for us this was stainless steel," said Brett. “Our design has an IP rating (ingress protection) of 67 and during approval it must survive an impact test to ensure that the IP rating does not fall below IP54".

In order to achieve ATEX approval for a new design, circuit diagrams, a bill of materials and engineering drawing had to be made available for certification, as well as the enclosure, for impact testing. There is also a requirement that the producer of the component is approved as a manufacture of ATEX products having achieving EN 13980. Mantracourt also undertake a 500V isolation test on each unit produced.”

“Putting in the necessary ‘systems’ was probably the bigger part of the project,” said Brett. “EN13980 is like ISO9000 with extras. We have to source from approved suppliers, check conformity of components, ensure traceability, and maintain documentation for ten years and such like. This is a lot of work but is essential for working in this part of the market.”

Arriving at a design that performed to the required technical specification and met the criteria for ATEX approval took the Mantracourt engineers several months. This high performance amplifier provides 2-wire 4-20mA current loop output and connects in-line providing signal conditioning for strain gauges, load cells, pressure and torque transducers.

“Compared to some of our other products, the ALA5 is not a complex design and has been an ideal product on which to learn the route to ATEX approval,” said Brett. “Certainly having ATEX approval adds a lot of value to our equipment and our company, so we are now looking forward to putting other products through the same approvals procedure.”

Mantracourt Leads The Way In Digital Strain Gauge Technology

Mantracourt, a leading manufacturer of industrial measurement technologies has announced the availability of their Strain Gauge to USB Converter (DSCUSB), a compact, high performance digital signal conditioner with USB connectivity aimed at applications requiring high accuracy measurement. The DSCUSB converts a strain gauge sensor input to a digital USB serial output. Having been developed and applied to several specialist applications, Mantracourt's digital strain gauge technology is now available off the shelf, along with a dedicated PC based data logging software package.

"The DSCUSB is ideal for all strain gauge bridge based sensors including strain, weight, load, force, torque, pressure & displacement," said Kelly Voysey, Marketing Co-Ordinator at Mantracourt. "Typical applications for the DSCUSB will be those requiring simple sensor connectivity in desk top settings such as test & measurement, R&D and laboratory environments. For several of our customers it's proving to be a very powerful technology that enables the accurate monitoring, collection and analysis of critical data."

Mantracourt are specialists in the design and manufacture of electronics for measurement technologies including strain gauge, temperature, pressure, voltage, current, potentiometer, rate, flow, LVDT and displacement in either analogue, digital or wireless form.

The Strain Gauge to USB Converter is enclosed within a rugged metal case, making the device suitable for all indoor environments. It is a combined miniature precision strain-gauge conditioning amplifier and an analogue-to-digital converter with a USB serial interface. For more advanced use, the device has five-point temperature compensation and seven-point transducer linearisation algorithms, all available via the comm port. The strain gauge, load cell, pressure transducer and torque sensor may be programmed to produce an output in engineering units; real mV/V calibration may be applied.

The DSCUSB also features an onboard shunt calibration resistor. The resolution is selectable to one part in 66,000 and may be programmed to take up to 500 points per second, with programmable peak-and-trough recording built in. Mantracourt supply standard Windows DLLs for both native USB and virtual serial port communications with the modules.

“We can provide this technology in an OEM format for companies looking to integrate this technology into their own systems,” said Kelly Voysey, “Such an application has seen the DSCUSB integrated into weighing scales for a diet club, providing a simple solution for a chain of Diet & Health Clubs. Members of these clubs weigh-in at weekly meetings and the system automatically tracks their weight loss to help reach their weight loss goals."

Mantracourt Targets Hazardous Environments with ATEX Approved Signal Amplifier

Mantracourt, a leading manufacturer of industrial measurement technologies, has announced the availability of their new ALA5 Load Cell Amplifier. The ALA5 is an ATEX approved strain gauge/load cell amplifier designed for operation within gas atmospheres in hazardous zones 0, 1 & 2.

Mantracourt are specialists in the design and manufacture of electronics for measurement technologies including strain gauge, temperature, pressure, voltage, current, potentiometer, rate, flow, LVDT and displacement in either analogue, digital or wireless form. The launch of an ATEX approved amplifier brings a new offering to those customers based in hazardous environments such as processing plants and refineries and enables Mantracourt’s technology to be applied directly into Zone 0 (under EX marking II 1 G Ex ia IIC T4).

"Being able to manufacture an ATEX approved product provides Mantracourt with a broader appeal," says Brett James, Senior Engineer. "Mantracourt’s expertise is instrumentation and being able to offer a high performing cost effective amplifier with ATEX certification provides us with another set of capabilities. We are now planning to expand our range of ATEX products and are assessing expansion into our (DSC) Digital Strain Converters and (T24) Radio Telemetry range".

The high performance amplifier provides 2-wire 4-20mA current loop output and connects in-line providing signal conditioning for strain gauges, load cells, pressure and torque transducers. The ALA5 is intrinsically safe to EN60079-11 (previously EN50020) standards. The device can be connected to ATEX approved equipment within the hazardous zone or to non-approved ATEX equipment outside the hazardous zone provided that a suitable barrier is used.

"The amplifier in question was already a well established 2 wire 4-20mA product converting strain gauge input to a mA output," said Brett James. "Gaining ATEX approval for Zones 0 entailed intense scrutiny of the amplifier design and its component parts, ensuring that our manufacturing systems met the requirements of the safety legislation. Although the project took several months to complete it had been in the planning for sometime."

Mantracourt are also offering the internal signal amplifier component of the ALA5 for inclusion within OEM designs. The ICA5ATEX Embedded Load Cell Amplifier is a small single board, high performance solution and is designed to be fitted into the majority of transducers for a wide range of signal conditioning for strain gauges, load cells, pressure, torque, etc.
